T Shankaranaryanan Nandakumar (T S Nandakumar) is an Indian carnatic music percussionist. He is primarily adept in playing the mridangam.[1]
Nandakumar was born on 17 March 1958 in Ambalappuzha, Kerala, India. He is the son of Shri Balakrishna Panicker and Shrimati Saraswati. He comes from the family of nadaswaram exponents, the Ambalapuzha Brothers.[2] He learnt mridangam under the guidance of Shri Kaithavana Madhavdas in the gurukula samprada tradition.[3][4]
Nandakumar promotes Indian carnatic music both as a teacher and a performer.[5][6] He has performed with many significant carnatic musicians such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M. D. Ramanathan, S. Ramanathan, R. K. Srikantan, V. Dakshinamoorthy, Bhimsen Joshi, M. Balamuralikrishna, T. N. Krishnan, L. Subramaniam, N. Ramani, K. J. Yesudas, N. Rajam, T. K. Govinda Rao, Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, Parassala B. Ponnammal, A. Kanyakumari, M. Chandrasekaran, D. K. Jayaraman, B. V. Raman, B. V. Lakshmanan and several others.[7][8] He has been described as "Guru of all musical things", "King of percussion in suburbs" and "The Master of Rhythm" by The Times of India.[9][10][11]
He has performed for various festivals all over the country, [12][13] besides giving performances for All India Radio and Doordarshan.[14] In addition to being an accompanist,[15][16] Nandakumar started his teaching career by training students in a number of music institutions.[17] He was a music professor in Shanmukhananda Fine Arts School which is recognized by the University of Mumbai for Diploma in Music and a visiting faculty in many other schools in India.[18] While teaching in India he conducted an Akanda Seva Bhajan for 24 hours, non-stop, with his students in Mumbai for the tsunami-affected victims of India.[19] Throughout the years he continues to train his students all carnatic percussive instruments like mridangam, konnakol, thavil, ghatam, kanjira, and morsing and coaches them to play in music and dance ensembles.[20][21] In the past he has conducted a full percussion ensemble with his students playing a variety of carnatic percussive instruments and has achieved good response from the musical community.[22][23] He also composed Jewels of Rhythm album which was performed by his students in a percussion ensemble format featuring classical carnatic instruments.[24] After relocating to the United States he began training budding artists by teaching in the Sri Venkateswara Temple, Pittsburgh and the Academy of Indian Music, New Jersey.[25] He currently has students all over the world.[26] Nandakumar continues to conduct several musical concerts, lectures, demonstrations and workshops all over the world.[27][28]
TSN's Percussive Arts Centre (TSNPAC) was founded by Nandakumar in the year 1998 in Mumbai, India and was inaugurated by V Subramanium, the former Maharashtra minister.[29][30] He founded TSNPAC as a medium for the students to hone their skills and play in unison with their peers in the carnatic arts.[31] Nandakumar incorporated TSNPAC after moving to New Jersey and continues to conduct courses in higher learning in the art of Carnatic percussion in the New Jersey area.[32] Since its inception, the centre has presented several annual events which included performances by artists in carnatic music, amongst others by N. Rajam, N. Ramani, A. Kanyakumari, L. Subramaniam.[33][34] He conducted decennary function of the centre with a performance by more than 100 students on stage.[35][36] Every year Mridangam Arangetram are conducted and the students of TSNPAC accompany main artists like A. Kanyakumari, without any rehearsal in order to conclude their graduation.[37] He conducted 108 professional student performances using a variety of instruments including drums in the Cleveland Thyagaraja festival. He continues to conduct performances in New Jersey area as well as in other parts of the United States.TSNPAC has conferred titles to the following artists for their contribution to music.[38]
