David Lewis Gedge (born 23 April 1960, in Bramley [citation needed]) is an English musician and songwriter.

Early life

Gedge grew up in Middleton, Greater Manchester in the area known as Top of Hebers. He attended Hollin High School (that became the Queen Elizabeth School and is now the re-built St Anne's Academy). He studied at the University of Leeds, graduating with a 2.1 BSc Mathematics in 1981.

Musical career

Gedge, together with Peter Solowka, fellow founder member, met Keith Gregory, an English student, by placing an advert for a bass player in the Leeds University Union.

He is the main songwriter and vocalist in the bands The Wedding Present and Cinerama. He sang a duet with Marine Research on their 1999 Peel Session.

Quotes

I’ve always thought that The Wedding Present was an inappropriate name for a pop group — more like a poem, or a book or something — and therefore quite attractive (to me!). I’ve also always been fascinated by weddings...[1]

“The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the 'Rock ‘n’ Roll' era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!” John Peel.[citation needed]

"We don't do encores." The Roxy, Los Angeles, CA 1989/90
