Casey Likes (born December 25, 2001) is an American actor, singer and filmmaker. He is known for playing Marty McFly in the 2023 Broadway production of Back to the Future: The Musical at the Winter Garden Theatre and originating the role of William Miller in the Broadway musical adaptation of the 2000 film Almost Famous.^[1]

Early Life

Likes was born and raised in Chandler, Arizona. His mother, Stephanie Likes, is also an actress and appeared in Les Misérables on Broadway and on a national tour. Likes attended Chandler High School, where in 2019 he performed as Jean Valjean in the school's production of Les Misérables. This role won him the award for Best Lead Male at the 2019 ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards.^[2] This award made Likes a contestant in that year's Jimmy Awards in New York City. At this competition, Likes was selected as one of the 8 finalists.^[3]

Career

Likes began his career doing community theatre in and around his hometown. He gained notoriety following the 2019 Jimmy Awards, in which he was a finalist. At this event, he was spotted by casting directors Jim Carnahan, Jillian Cimini and Jason Thinger, which led to his casting as William Miller in the new musical Almost Famous at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California. The musical is based on the 2000 movie of the same name.^[4] The production was directed by Jeremy Herrin, with music and lyrics by Cameron Crowe and the book and additional lyrics by Tom Kitt. It began previews on September 13, 2019 and ran from September 27 to October 27, 2019.^[5]

When the musical transferred to Broadway in 2022, Likes remained in the role of William Miller. Almost Famous opened on November 3rd, 2022 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. It closed on January 8th, 2023, having run for 30 preview performances and 77 regular performances due to poor reviews and box office returns.^[6]

Despite this, Likes' performance was widely praised and it garnered him a 2023 Theatre World Award.^[7] The original Broadway cast recording of Almost Famous was released on April 21, 2023 and features Likes.^[8]

Following the San Diego run of Almost Famous, Likes was cast in season 2 of Crypt TV's The Birch as Brian Moses.

In 2021, he wrote, directed, and acted in a short film entitled Thespians starring multiple Broadway performers, including Sydney Lucas, Andrew Barth Feldman, Rob McClure, and Antonio Cipriano.^[9]

It was announced on June 1, 2021, that Likes would be starring as Richie Shepherd in the MGM horror film Dark Harvest, based on the novel of the same name by Norman Partridge. The film completed post-production two years later and was released digitally on October 13, 2023, after being delayed due of the 2022 merger of Amazon and MGM.^[10] He also starred as Gene Simmons, the bassist and co-lead singer of Kiss, in the Neil Bogart biopic Spinning Gold. This film was released on March 31, 2023.^[11]

Likes is currently starring in Back to the Future: The Musical on Broadway, which began previews on June 30, 2023 at the Winter Garden Theatre and opened on August 3, 2023. Likes plays the leading role of Marty McFly, alongside Roger Bart as Doc Brown.^[12]
