Basanta Bahadur Kunwar is the 30th Inspector General of Nepal Police.[1] On 24 March 2023 he was appointed Inspector General of Nepal Police

Early Life & Education

Kunwar was born in Sandhikharka Municipality-1 of Arghakhanchi district on March 28, 1970. He joined the Nepal Police Service from the rank of Police Inspector on March 19, 1995. He completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tribhuvan University.[4]

Career

Kunwar was promoted to Additional Inspector General of Police on 10 March 2024. The Council of Ministers on Friday appointed Kunwar on 24 March 2024 by superseding other 4 officers.[5] He will retire on 19 March 2025 in line with the regulatory 30- year service term.

Controversies

Kunwar was recalled from the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia, within three months of his posting, in connection with his alleged involvement in a 2009 torture case. During that period of time, he was leading the Siraha district where a youth was arrested on theft charges, was severely tortured. Other than that, several victims of the 10-year Maoist insurgency have objected when he promoted to Additional IGP.[6]
