The novel was generally well received by critics. On the review aggregator website Book Marks, the novel received a "Rave" consensus based on a mix of 3 "positive" and 5 "rave" reviews by mainstream critics.[3] In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews called the novel "another provocative and page-turning entry in the Southern noir genre."[4]
Chris Bohjalian, Ellery Adams, and Roxanne Gay praised the novel with 5-star reviews on Goodreads.[citation needed] The novel was also nominated for the 2023 Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Mystery and Thriller.[citation needed]
