Seneca is a city in Nemaha County, Kansas, United States.[4] It is also the county seat of Nemaha County. In 2020, 2,139 people lived there.[3]
Seneca was created in 1857. It was named after Seneca County, Ohio.[5]
The first post office in Seneca was created in November 1858.[6]
Seneca grew along the wagon route from St. Joseph, Missouri to Oregon and California. British explorer Richard Francis Burton was going to California in 1860. He went through town and noted: "... Seneca, a city consisting of a few shanties ..."[7]
Seneca was a station on the Pony Express of the early 1860s. The station was in the Smith Hotel, at the present-day place of Fourth and Main Streets.[8]
Seneca was incorporated as a city in 1870.[9]
The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 1.79 square miles (4.64 km2). All of it is land.[2]

The 2020 census says that there were 2,139 people, 929 households, and 550 families living in Seneca. Of the households, 73.1% owned their home and 26.9% rented their home.
The median age was 46.0 years. Of the people, 93.5% were White, 0.8% were Black, 0.1% were Native American, 0.1% were Asian, 2.2% were from some other race, and 3.2% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the people.[3][10]
The 2010 census says that there were 1,991 people, 908 households, and 509 families living in Seneca.[11]
