File:MellonParkFountain.jpg (delete | talk | history | logs).
I've been there a few times, and I don't remember if there are any indications of when the fountain was built or who designed it, but it looks to be older than 1943 in my opinion. I don't know, but those gardens were definitely there before the park was donated to the public in the 1940s. I can't find any information about when the fountain was made online, but I did find an article regarding when the fountain was fixed so that it could work again in 2009. I went there soon after it was fixed, and saw it working (unfortunately, the water causes green algae to grow on some of the sculptors). About the restoration work, the article says, "It also returns several historical elements from the garden's 1929 design by Alden and Harlow for the Richard B. Mellon estate." According to the park's website, Alden and Harlow designed the gardens in 1912. It would be a shame to lose that picture for Wikipedia, in my opinion, because I think the fountain is probably the most interesting thing about Mellon Park. I mean, if you go there, it's basically a relatively small city park with trees and a gate, and then a hill goes up to a little plateau-like area with a clearing, and then the main focus goes to the old garden area which leads right up to the fountain - which is basically the focal point of the park. The old mansions seem kinda walled-off from the "park" part of the park itself by trees and gates and hillsides, and the parking lot area. I think that the old garden area, with the fountain as the central focal point, is really the heart of Mellon Park. Leepaxton (talk) 18:44, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wrote to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy about the fountain in Mellon Park, and this is the message I got in reply:
"Lee,
Many thanks for your inquiry. Included below is the pertinent information you are looking for regarding the sculptural fountain in Mellon Park:
In 1929, Mellon chose Vitale and Geiffert, a premier design firm of the Country House Era, working in collaboration with Gilmore D. Clarke, to redesign the Walled Garden. The garden is enclosed on the two sides with tapestry brick flanking a Gothic wall of limestone. Niches in the end wall once held sculptures of the seasons by Edmond R. Amateis (1897-1981), who also created the sculptural fountain.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions you may have.
All the best,
Bill Ferguson
Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy"
The above message seems to indicate the year 1929, though I found a website (here) about Mellon Park that says, "Dating to 1935, its Walled Garden is a classic work of landscape architecture by Vitale and Geiffert, containing sculpture by Edmond R. Amateis." Another website (here), which may have been influenced by the previous site, says, "The garden, which dates back to 1935..." Then, there's this photograph on flickr listed "Circa 1935" which shows the fountain, and this 1930s-era Mellon Park Plan which shows the area where the fountain is located. In the Excerpt about the Walled Garden's Layout, it says, "In 1929 a formal, walled garden was designed by Vitale and Geiffert for the area to the west of the house (Figure 11.10)." It doesn't say much about the fountain, but it does go on to say, "In the 1935 photos... potted plants were set out on the paved patio between this fountain and the central limestone and brick wall." In the Excerpt about the Walled Garden's Design, it says, "The issue of Country Life for December, 1934, carried an article, "Renaissance Garden," which gave an illustrated account of the walled garden on the estate of R. B. Mellon in Pittsburgh." It goes on to say, "The magazine account credits the firm Vitale and Geiffert working in collaboration with Gilmore D. Clarke for the garden's design, while Edmond Amateis is named as the sculptor of the three bronze figures that were included in the scheme, and Samuel Yellin is credited with the fine wrought iron grills and gates." It doesn't mention the fountain there, but later it mentions different ideas and plans for the garden "ranging from March through November 1929" and "two alternative schemes being considered". The fountain is not mentioned, but a little later, it goes on to say, "A comparable choice between two design proposals marked the development of the far, western end of the garden. The built arrangement of fountain (designed by Amateis), fountain pool, and terrace was preferred over the construction of a large garden shelter..." "The appearance of this garden is documented not only by the illustrations in the magazine article of 1934, but also more amply by two privately owned sets of photographs of the property taken in 1931 and 1935." "The photographs taken in the full summer of 1935 preserve the image of an exceptionally lush, densely planted garden and estate (as seen in Figure 1.7)..." "Figure 1.8 shows the central lawn of the walled garden in 1935, and reveals that the two flanking rows of flowering cherry trees had been reduced to one tree on each side of the lawn toward the fountain terrace." This does not seem to provide a clear date as to when the fountain was built, but it was definitely there in 1935, and probably there in 1934, and maybe even there in 1931. The wall around the fountain was designed in 1929, and probably built soon after that (I figure the wall may have been there in 1930, and was most likely there by 1931). The fountain was probably added not long after the wall around it was built, but exactly when we do not yet know. I will write back to Bill Ferguson of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and see if he can try and find out any more information about the fountain. Leepaxton (talk) 13:14, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Lee,
I have been informed that the fountain was designed and built in 1927 by Edmond R. Amateis. Am currently awaiting documentation that will support this date, but wanted to send you a quick note in the meantime.
Thanks,
Bill"
I will post more information when I receive it. Leepaxton (talk) 23:14, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I received a message from Bill Ferguson of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy yesterday, and this is what he said:
"Lee,
We are in the process of obtaining feedback from the City, so I will keep you posted.
Thanks again,
Bill"
