WP:DECORATIVE non-free use in the main infobox of James Wesley Rawles which fails WP:NFCC#1 (WP:FREER) and WP:NFCC#8 (WP:NFC#CS). Despite the claim made in the non-free use rationale provided for this file, there's nothing at all "unique" about this particular signature. It's not overly artistic or creative in any way, and just appears to be pretty much a standard signature that wouldn't be eligible for separate copyright protection under US copyright law per c:Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag. There's also no sourced critical commentary in the article regarding the signature that actually makes it important for the reader to see; in other words, omitting the signature in any way would not be detrimental to the reader's understanding of what's written in the article about Rawles. The question then is whether this really needs to remain licensed as non-free. As previously stated, personal signatures are, for the most part, not considered eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law and thus can be uploaded and licensed as ((PD-signature)). In this case, however, the uploader of the file appears to also be Rawles and Rawles doesn't seem to be a very well-known public figure; so, I'm not sure whether this file is really encyclopedically relevant to Wikipedia readers even if the file's licensing can be converted to PD. It seems more of a vanity upload (at least to me) than something that increases the reader's understanding of Rawles, and thus adds very little (if any) encyclopedic value to the article. I'm also not sure whether there are any WP:BLP issures related to uploading and using signatures of individuals like Rawles and licensing their signtaures as PD. My suggestion is to delete the file if it needs to remain licensed as non-free, but I'm not so sure what to do with it if it can be relicensed as PD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:03, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you consider it WP:DECORATIVE, then you are entitled to your opinion. But that signature can be used to prove the authenticity of autographed books. (I've had three New York Times bestsellers.) That signature, from my original scanned file, was used on the blades all of the Cold Steel Rawles Voyager limited edition knives. We live in a world that is rife with copyright violations and pirating. The publishing world, like the music industry, has been seriously undermined by pirating. More people have read pirated electronic copies of my books than legitimate published ones, that earn me and my publishers royalties. And there are more fake Rawles Voyager knives -- made in mainland China -- than there are legitimate ones, actually made by the Cold Steel company. And even those fakes carry my signature. It's WP:DECORATIVE in the context of Wikipedia's non-free context use policy (which has a specific meaning). There's really no non-free content policy-based justification for the signature to be used as such and there's very little encyclopedic value added by it to the Wikipedia article written about you. You can upload it if you want, but that doesn't mean Wikipedia has to use. Moreover, most signatures are not copyrightable under US copyright law and there's nothing to indicate yours would be any different. From a Wikipedia copyright licensing standpoint, the file should most likely be relicensed as public domain under the license ((PD-signature)). The other concerns you mention have nothing to do with Wikipedia per se since Wikipedia can't really control how others reuse its content outside of Wikipedia. If someone wants to fake your signature, it's going to make no difference to them how the file is licensed on Wikipedia and it's not going to be up to Wikipedia to track such people done and take action against them if they use it in a fraudulent way. If you're really concerned about such things, you probably should request that the file be deleted from Wikipedia so there's at least one less way for others to gain access to your signature. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:39, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

• Keep/relicense as PD With all due respect to the WPian in question, his signature is in the Public Domain. That doesn't mean it doesn't have some protections (such as people cannot affix it to a document claiming they are someone they are not...that'd be fraud...or to deceive people into thinking he endorses a product that he doesn't), but it's PD. If there is a problem with email, however, the VRT member who reviewed the file most likely will email the copyright holder and explain what is still needed, and they will then add ((Permission received)) to the file's page. That's when the clock starts ticking. If 30 days pass after the "Permission received" template is added and the matter is still unresolved, the file essentially becomes eligible for immediate speedy deletion per WP:F11 but VRT can tag the file with ((npd)) instead to grant an additional seven days before the file is eligible for speedy deletion.
