White Abarrio (born 18 March 2019) is a multiple Grade I winning American Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2022 he won the Florida Derby and competed against the best three-year-olds in the US. In 2023, as a four-year old, he won the Grade I Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course and the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.
White Abarrio is a gray colt bred by Spendthrift Farm out of the Into Mischief mare Catching Diamonds. White Abarrio was sold as a yearling at the 2020 OBS Winter Mixed Sale for $7,500 to Jose Ordonez from Summerfield's consignment. He was a $40,000 purchase by Carlos Perez from the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, where he was consigned by Nice and Easy Thoroughbreds.[3] White Abarrio is the only one of Catching Diamonds' five foals to race. Her most recent offspring are a yearling Lord Nelson colt and a Yaupon 2023 filly.[4]
Initially, White Abarrio was trained by Carlos Perez through his company Clap Embroidery. After winning his maiden at Gulfstream Park on September 24, 2021[5] he was sold privately to C2 Racing Stable which is owned by Clint and Mark Cornett. The original owners through La Milagrosa Stable retained a share. The partnership moved the training duties to Saffie Joseph Jr.[6] White Abarrio provided Joseph Jr. his second Grade I victory when he won the Florida Derby.[3]
In December 2021 the registration of ownership was adjusted to C2 Racing Stable & Antonio Pagnano prior to the Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct.[7]
In May 2023, Saffie Joseph Jr. was suspended by Churchill Downs Inc. after two of his horses broke down at Churchill Downs. This forced the owners to look for other trainers for their horses.[8] The owners of White Abarrio moved their horse to Richard Dutrow Jr.'s stable.[4]
