Samuel McGowan was a justice on the South Carolina Supreme Court. He was born on October 9, 1819, in Laurens County, South Carolina. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1841. In 1846, he volunteered for the Palmetto Regiment and was active in the Mexican War. He also served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was elected as an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1879 and served there until July 1894.[1]
