Production

Format

In an early report of The Express Tribune that stated "the biggest challenge for the show is to bridge the gap between the indie scene and the mainstream musicians,"[8] however, the multiple-producers format was a huge hit last year and this made the show to be returned with the same format, despite Strings claim that show will follow the original format.[9]

Artist debuts

Many of the season 10 debut artists were either siblings or children of famous musicians,[10] including Daniyal Zafar brother of Ali Zafar, Zaw Ali daughter of Sajjad Ali, Sanwal Khan Esakhelvi son of Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi. Shows co-producer Bilal Maqsood said, "all of these young musicians are actually very good at what they do," further saying, "it was just by chance that Season 10 will end up featuring so many of them."[7] Bilal explained these debuts with their acclaimed families members including saying, "We have high hopes from all of them. Danyal Zafar, for instance, is a very good singer and we had listened to his demo recording even last year, Sanwal Eesakhelvi is very talented. Akbar Ali is an artist of considerable stature in the classical music genre and he has done a brilliant job. Sajjad Ali had composed a song that required a female vocalist and he suggested that his daughter should sing with him. We listened to her and her voice complements the song very well.”[11] Ali Zafar commented on the career debut of his youngest brother Danyal Zafar, "I feel that the struggle is very important and Danyal needs to experience it in order to move ahead."[7] While Danyal said, "I always dreamt of a debut that could best help me express myself as an artist in such a way that my music could also connect with people."[12][13]

Acclaimed singer Humera Arshad marked her debut with this season she expressed, "There is no music releasing companies and under such circumstances I think Coke Studio is doing a great job".[14] Sufi singer and naat-khawan Hina Nasrullah,[15] Lux Style Award winner Aima Baig,[16] and several others also marked their debuts. Salman Ahmad's son Sherjan Ahmad debut as an acoustic guitar to his father's vocals, classical singer Javed Bashir's brother Akbar Ali marked his debut and house band member violinist Javed Iqbal's son Ghulam Muhammad debut as a cello player. Series co-producer Faisal Kapadia said, "For Salman Ahmed’s composition, we needed more guitarists and Salman suggested that since Sherjan had already been playing for him at concerts we could take him on board. We heard Sherjan play and decided to go with him."[7]

Acclaimed guitarist Aamir Zaki made his final appearance with this season,[17] before his death on June 22, 2017.[18][19] Taking on completing a decade,[20] Coca-Cola GM Rizwan U. Khan said, “We have come a long way since we embarked on this challenging journey a decade ago. Looking back, we feel greatly humbled that Coke Studio has been able to achieve so much, in terms of bringing virtually unknown or little known musicians into the national limelight, re-introducing music genres like qawwali and sufi music to the youth of Pakistan, continuing to stay true to the promise of producing quality fusion of music and practically playing an important role in reviving the music industry of Pakistan.”[21][22]

Reception

The show has been critically viewed for not producing new songs. Rafay Mehmood of The Express Tribune said that the lack of original music "has become a chronic problem with Coke Studio. With almost every passing season the title cover studio is becoming more relevant to the show than anything else."[8] The artist-line up received mixed reviews, Asif Nawaz of The Express Tribune quipped, "While it's only time that will tell how the latest season unfolds, the urge to indulge in presenting our two cents about it seems too tempting to resist."[23]
